Batwoman (The CW, Oct. 6)

Vigilante justice is central to Gotham City’s storylines and with Batman missing; someone has to answer the ‘bat signal’. To fight crime, the cape crusader’s mantle now falls on Kate Kane, a.k.a the Batwoman.

The titular character is played by Australian actress Ruby Rose, who gained global attention in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. In this latest show to join the Arrowverse, she is joined by Rachel Skarsten (Lost Girl), Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf), and Camrus Johnson (Safe Spaces).

With the Batverse being one of the most beloved comic book adaptations, the entry of a female lead only increases the hype. The heroine already made her debut in last year’s Arrowverse crossover, but this installment seems to be set a few months before Elseworlds

What should you look forward to? The 2019 crossover, Crisis On Infinite Worlds, starting on December 8, will see Batwoman join a star-studded cast to save the multiverse.

Modern Love (Amazon Prime, Oct. 18)

This is an adaptation of The New York Times’ long-running column of the same title. According to its synopsis, these will be “unique stories about the joys and tribulations of love, each inspired by a real-life personal essay.”

The first season of the show covers 8 stories about the good, the bad, and the ugly side of love and acceptance. This will be an anthology series with a new cast showcasing the plot in each episode.

Among the famous people in the cast include Anna Hathaway, Catherine Keener, Andrew Scott, John Slattery, and Tina Fey. If not for anything else, watching how these stars deal with the intricacies of love will surely be worth it

Themes that are featured range from unconventional new families to failed dates. The show comes after the successful adaptation of the column into a podcast, a feat that the executive producer John Carney wants to bring to the screen.

The Morning Show (Apple TV+, Nov. 1)

Since Friends wrapped up in 2004, fans have been waiting for the return of Jennifer Aniston in a TV show. So far these prayers have gone unanswered until Apple TV+ announced the upcoming drama The Morning Show.

Following the firing of a newscaster (Steve Carell) for sexual misconduct, his co-host (Jennifer Aniston) looks forward to fill his post. However, the promotion might be just a mirage as a formidable and ambitious newcomer (Reese Witherspoon) is also eyeing the vacancy.

This will be the platform’s original streaming drama. Another notable name is Mark Duplass. Apart from the lead actors known for mastery of comedy roles, the storyline promises to be intriguing.

Jennifer returns to TV after featuring in Box Office hits such as Horrible Bosses and We’re the Millers. This will, however, be a more cutthroat drama exploring sexism, ageism, and corporate misconduct.

Watchmen (HBO, Oct. 20)

After Zack Snyder’s Watchmen film in 2009, there have been calls for a TV show based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel. Just like the film, the show takes place in an alternative history where superheroes and vigilantes are treated as villains.

The series is set 30 years after the events of the original storyline. The story will see the caped heroes coming together to fight the system as others try to stop them. This whole new world will see Doctor Manhattan, Silk Spectre, and Ozymandias return to the silver screen.

The new re-energized and re-imagined take on the novel is produced by Damon Lindelof, who was behind Lost and The Leftovers. Oscar-winner Regina King will be the focus of the series as she transitions from a detective to the vigilante Sister Night.

What backstory will the writers build on? In a long Instagram post, Lindelof explained that “The Comedian is dead. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica”

The Mandalorian (Disney+, Nov. 4)

Ever since George Lucas introduced the world to Star Wars in 1977, the thirst for the space saga has been unquenchable. Fans have already been treated to 8 “Trilogy”, 2 anthology, and 3 spin-off films, as well as 3 animated series.

And now, the first Star Wars live-action series!

The Mandalorian is the story of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The show is billed to be dark and violent as the hero takes you through the lives of galactic bounty hunters and outlaws.

The adventure takes place after the Galactic Empire fell (Return of the Gedi), and before the rise of the First Order (The Force Awakens). This will be an expansion of the franchise without the main characters from the films.

The lead role falls on the Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal- Game of Thrones’ Oberyn Martell. The star-studded cast also includes former MMA fighter Gina Carano, Nick Nolte (Hotel Rwanda) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad).

The Witcher (Netflix, TBD)

The Witcher is one of the highly anticipated TV series premiering this fall. The show is an adaptation of fantasy stories from the acclaimed Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The series comes after the successful adaptation of the books into a Polish film and TV show, video games, and a graphic novel. While the premiere date is yet to be announced, hawk-eyed fans found deleted Netflix’s tweets which point to Dec. 17.

The show is hyped to be Netflix’s solution to HBO’s Game of Thrones. And going by the previous live-action adaptations, expect a high fantasy world with R-rated storylines.

The story follows Superman actor Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter. His solitary lifestyle comes tumbling down when he has to team up with a sorceress (Anya Chalotra) and a princess (Freya Allan), “in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.”

Raising Dion (Netflix, Oct. 4)

Are you a fan of Black Panther’s Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan)? Well, he not only appears in this TV series but he is one of the executive producers alongside Dennis Liu, the writer of the comic book from which the show was adapted.

Unlike most superhero series which develop from the perspective of the hero, this one is told from a mother’s perspective. Based on the comic book, Raising Dion, the show revolves around the life of a widowed mother Nicole Warren (Alisha Wainwright) and her son Dion (Ja’Siah Young).

When her husband Mark (Micheal B.Jordan) dies, Nicole braves the struggles of single-handedly raising her son and in the process discovers that he exhibits superhero-like abilities. She fights to keep this secret while trying to investigate the source of her son’s gifts.

Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter) comes to help her and together, they must now keep the seven-year-old from antagonists looking for every opportunity to exploit him. Find out if they succeed amidst the twists and turns of events.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (Netflix, Oct. 11)

When the AMC TV series Breaking Bad ended in 2013, fans were left with wild speculations of what would happen next. As the creator of the series Vince Gilligan would later admit, he was already toying with ideas of what should happen to Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

It wasn’t until near Breaking Bad’s tenth anniversary back in 2017 when Gilligan shared the idea of El Camino: a Breaking Bad movie with Paul, and as they say, the rest is history.

The movie revolves around the life of Jesse Pinkman after he escapes from his captors. With the law enforcement officers in hot pursuit, Jesse is forced to grapple with his past in order to regain his life.

Back on the set with Paul are Matt Jones as Badger and Charles Baker as Skinny Pete, Jesse’s friends. The hitman Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and Old Joe (Larry Hankin) have also been confirmed. Walter White died, right?

Living With Yourself (Netflix, Oct. 18)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w54yW2Ur50

What if you had an opportunity to become a better version of yourself? In the Sci-Fi TV series Living With Yourself, Miles Elliot (Paul Rudd) welcomes the opportunity to escape from his boring and uninspired life by undergoing an experimental spa treatment.

His wishes are granted, except there are two of him now and the other version is smarter, more charming and confident. Marvel’s Ant-Man, Rudd, brings to life two strikingly different character versions of the same man. Drama, tension and a good dose of comedy ensue as each ‘Miles’ struggles to take control of his future.

In the meantime, what happens to Miles’ wife Kate (Aisling Bea), his career, and his identity?

Find out in the show created by Emmy Academy winner Timothy Greenberg (The Daily Show With Jon Stewart) and directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (The Battle of the Sexes, Little Miss Sunshine).

Dollface (Hulu, Nov. 18)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftFFpOFylyE

This is a female-centric TV series by Jordan Weiss. Jules (Kat Dennings), a young woman who gets dumped by her long-time boyfriend finds herself dealing with both her loss and the challenge of rekindling female friendships she had deserted while with the boyfriend.

The show majors mostly on the female friendship among three women; Jules, Madison (Brenda Song), and Stella (Shay Mitchell). Fans should also expect occasional male appearances throughout the series.

Jordan Weiss also serves as an executive producer alongside Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie, Kat Dennings, Nicole King, Stephanie Laing, Bryan Unkeless, and Brett Hedblom.

Catherine the Great (HBO, Oct. 21)

If you are a fan of historical period dramas, then you need to switch to HBO this fall. Academy Award winner Helen Mirren plays the 18th century Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great. She also doubles as the show’s executive producer.

The show already premiered in UK’s Sky Atlantic on Oct.3, and is expected to hit the screens on Oct 21, in the US. The miniseries will follow the tsarina as she transforms the Russian empire amidst a tumultuous personal life

You will get to see her famed relationship with Grigory Potemkin, a military general played by Australian actor Jason Clarke. Others in the cast include Kevin McNally (Pirates of The Carribean), and Richard Roxburgh (Van Helsing).

The show is written and directed by Phillip Martin and Nigel Williams. The duo has collaborated with Mirren in other successful productions, making this another likely hit.

The Expanse (Amazon Prime, Dec. 13)

Here is a TV show that you can jump into right now. The Expanse started airing back in 2015 and already has 3 seasons showing on Syfy. The NBC Universal-owned cable network, however, canceled the show after the third season, citing restrictive distribution arrangements.

The move did not augur well with fans who could not get enough of the Sci-fi drama. Amazon Prime Video saved the day by purchasing the rights to the fourth and fifth seasons.

All 10 episodes of the fourth season will premiere on December 13, giving you enough time to binge-watch the first 36 episodes. The drama is based on James S.A. Corey’s novels of the same name.

The new installments will see Steven Strait return as James Holden, the leader of an antihero crew in a space-faring future civilization. His band of misfits has to use their wits to save the universe amidst a Cold War-like ‘peaceful’ period.

There you go! What’s your pick? Whichever show you choose among these, you are bound to be thrilled, awed, stunned, and thoroughly entertained. Happy TV time!
